THC V. CBD

The cannabis plant contains over 100 different cannabinoids, which are natural compounds that can affect the mind and body in various ways. The two most well-known cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is renowned for its psychoactive effects, which produce a sensation commonly referred to as being "high."

On the other hand, CBD is the second most prevalent cannabinoid in cannabis, particularly in hemp varieties that are cultivated for their high CBD content. Unlike THC, CBD does not induce a "high" or psychoactive effect on its own. 

New to Cannabis? Here’s How Much to Start With

If you’re new to cannabis, less is more. Start low and go slow—everyone’s tolerance and body chemistry are different, and even factors like meals can influence effects.

To help ensure a comfortable experience, we recommend first-time consumers choose products with no more than 5mg of THC per serving.

Here’s a general idea of what to expect, depending on how you consume cannabis:

Vaporization or Smoking

  • You’ll usually start feeling effects within about 90 seconds.

  • The high tends to peak around 15–30 minutes

  • Most people feel the effects for about 2–3 hours.

Edibles

  • Edibles take much longer to kick in—often around 90 minutes.

  • The effects can peak anywhere between 2–6 hours and may last 4–12 hours total.

A good rule of thumb: always wait until you’ve hit the peak effects before deciding if you want more. Taking too much too soon is the most common beginner mistake.

Why Does Cannabis Hit Everyone a Little Differently?

Cannabis can produce different effects based on the strain and the natural compounds it contains. While everyone experiences cannabis differently, strains are generally grouped into three main categories:

Sativa strains are typically uplifting and cerebral, often associated with energy, creativity, and

daytime use.

Hybrid strains combine traits of both Sativa and Indica, offering balanced effects that can feel

relaxing without being overly sedating.

Indica strains are known for calming, body-focused effects and are commonly used in the evening or

at night to promote relaxation and sleep.

More Tips for Cannabis Begginers

Beyond following local cannabis laws, there are a few simple tips that can help make your experience more enjoyable—especially if you’re new.

Cannabis & Alcohol
If you’re just starting out, it’s best not to mix cannabis and alcohol (often called crossfading). Since both can alter how you feel, combining them may be overwhelming. Stick to one or the other while you’re learning how cannabis affects you.

Cannabis & Food
Here’s your sign to eat first. Using cannabis on an empty stomach isn’t recommended, especially for beginners. Having food in your system can help keep the effects from feeling too intense.
It’s also totally normal to feel extra hungry after consuming cannabis—hello, munchies.

Anxiety & Paranoia
Everyone reacts differently to cannabis, but anxiety or paranoia can happen if you’ve had too much. If that happens, stay calm and settle into a safe, comfortable space. The effects will fade with time.
Drinking water can help, and some people find that snacking on citrus fruits—like oranges, lemons, or grapefruits—can help take the edge off.
